Udayamperoor crematorium remains closed due to the absence of an operator, causing inconvenience and increased funeral expenses for residents.

Udayamperoor: The crematorium under Udayamperoor panchayat has been non-operational for the past two weeks due to the absence of a designated operator, prompting public complaints and mounting concerns among residents.

The panchayat had previously entrusted the operation of the crematorium to a person who had been removed from the driver's position in an ambulance owned by the local body. However, after legally challenging his removal, the court ordered his reinstatement to the driver post. It is alleged that the crematorium’s operation has remained disrupted ever since his return to ambulance duty.

Located near the Nadakkavu–Mulanthuruthy Road, the crematorium was built at a cost of ₹2 crore and was inaugurated last year. With the facility now locked, residents have been forced to take the deceased to nearby towns such as Thrippunithura and Perumbilly for cremation and burial. This has not only caused inconvenience but also increased funeral expenses, as they are now dependent on facilities managed by other local bodies.

Residents have urged the authorities to intervene immediately and reopen the crematorium.

“The crematorium, constructed using funds from MLA K Babu’s Asset Development Fund, remains closed most of the time. It must be ensured that the facility does not deteriorate due to disuse. Despite repeated demands, no steps have been taken to appoint a new operator. This inaction is objectionable,” said M P Shaimon, UDF Parliamentary party leader.

Meanwhile, the Panchayat is looking to engage a new operator for the facility. “A new operator will be appointed as soon as the panchayat committee convenes. The previous operator has resumed duty as an ambulance driver. The crematorium is closed due to construction works on the road leading up to it,” said T K Jayachandran, Chairperson of the Panchayat Welfare Standing Committee.
