Following the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) due to heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for educational institutions in three districts on Friday. The Collectors have declared a holiday in Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad districts.

In Kasaragod, all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, madrasas, anganwadis, and special classes, have been declared a holiday. In Wayanad district, the holiday applies to all educational institutions except for residential institutions. In Kannur district, the holiday applies only to Schools, anganwadis, religious education institutions and tuition centres.

However, previously scheduled examinations — including professional, university, and departmental exams — will be conducted as planned.

The IMD has issued a red alert in three districts on Friday- Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad. Meanwhile, an orange alert is in place for three districts- Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur. A yellow warning is in place for Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta, while no alerts are in place for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

A red alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm, while an orange alert predicts rainfall between 15 cm and 20 cm. A yellow alert means rainfall in the range of 7 cm to 15 cm is possible.

Meanwhile, the weather agency has warned of strong winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph likely to prevail in Kerala till July 21. Due to the prevailing situation, the IMD has issued a warning for fishermen to exercise caution.

The Wayanad District Collector also declared a red alert for the Banasura Sagar Dam after the water level reached 773 metres. Authorities have informed that the shutters will be opened once the water level exceeds 773.50 metres. However, if the rain recedes in the dams' catchment areas, then the shutters won't be opened.
