Kollam Boy’s electrocution: School management announces ₹10 lakh compensation

Kollam: The management of Thevalakkara Boys High School on Sunday announced that a compensation of ₹10 lakh will be provided to the family of the boy who was electrocuted on the school campus. Mithun (13), a Class 8 student, was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live wire while attempting to retrieve his slippers that had fallen into the school’s cycle shed. The tragic incident occurred on July 17.

The state government had handed over an emergency aid of ₹3 lakh to the boy's family. KSEB also had given a compensation of ₹5 lakh amid the public outcry over the low hanging electric line close to the school building.

Following the incident, the school headmistress, S Suja, was suspended after the General Education Department ordered immediate action against her for alleged lapses in ensuring student safety.

Meanwhile, police have decided to form a Special Investigation Team to probe the boy’s death. Currently, the case is being investigated by a team led by the Sasthamcotta Station House Officer.

The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case suo motu in connection with the incident. Commission member V Geetha directed the Director General of Education and the Kollam Rural District Police Chief to conduct an urgent investigation and submit a report within 14 days. The action was taken based on media reports.
