Kozhikode: A woman who arrived from Oman was taken into custody by Karipur Police after she was found carrying one kilogram of MDMA concealed inside toffee packets. Three men who came to receive her at the airport were also arrested.

The accused is N S Surya (31) of Nellivalayil House from Vazhumuttam in Pathanamthitta. The three men who had come to receive her, Ali Akbar (32) and C P Shafeer (30), both natives of Minniyur, Tirurangadi and M Muhammad Rafi (30) of Vellalikkunnu, were also apprehended by the police team led by Inspector A Abbas Ali.

Surya, who arrived on an Air India Express flight from Muscat, was caught with narcotics during a baggage inspection by the police. The police team, acting on a tip-off, had arrived at the airport earlier and set up surveillance.

They moved in as Surya was about to leave the airport after clearing customs examinations. Upon detaining the trio who came to receive her, officers inspected Surya’s luggage and found the contraband concealed in a toffee packet.

Police have also obtained information about the person who dispatched the drugs through Surya. A detailed investigation is underway, said DYSP P K Santosh.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Surya had landed in Muscat on July 16 and returned after just a few days. Police suspect she was recruited as a drug carrier. While women being used as drug couriers is not uncommon, this is the largest MDMA haul involving a woman passenger at Kozhikode Airport.
