Konni: Krishna, a 13-year-old tusker at the Konni Elephant Training Centre (Anakoodu), ran amok displaying signs of musth. The incident occurred around 8 am on Tuesday but was swiftly brought under control by mahouts.
As part of his daily routine, Krishna had completed 13 rounds of walking around the campus. However, while being led back to his shed, he suddenly turned defiant. Ignoring his mahout’s commands, Krishna charged down the road in front of the shed and headed toward the parking ground near the main entrance.
The mahouts managed to tether him to a tree using the rope around his neck and chains on his legs. Despite the restraints, Krishna continued to struggle and attempted to break free. After sustained effort, they secured chains on his hind legs and ropes on the front legs.
Fortunately, it was a holiday for the Eco-tourism Centre, and the main gate was closed, preventing the elephant from reaching the public road and averting a potential disaster. To calm him, the mahouts offered palm leaves and other treats. By around 11.30 am, Krishna had settled down and was safely led back to his shed.
Camp authorities confirmed that the outburst was triggered by musth. Krishna was captured from the Koodappara forests under the Paruthippally Range in the Thiruvananthapuram division in 2014.
