Kannur: A week after the death of Vayalapra native Reema and her three-year-old son, police have booked the woman’s husband and mother-in-law for abetment to suicide. The action was taken after recovering Reema’s suicide note, which revealed that she had been subjected to domestic abuse at the home of her husband, Kamal Raj.

Reema (30) and her son Krishiv Raj (3), also known as Kannan, jumped into the river from the Chembalikundu bridge in the early hours of July 20. While Reema’s body was recovered the same day, the child’s body was found on July 23.

In the suicide note, written on the back of an examination hall ticket, Reema claimed that her husband had thrown her and their son out of the house at his mother’s insistence. She made serious allegations against both her husband and mother-in-law.

“My mother-in-law never allowed me to live peacefully. My husband, Kamal Raj, kicked me and my child out of the house under her influence. She always wanted to keep her son with her. Girls like me won’t get justice in this society. The law will always protect the culprits, even if we die or get murdered,” Reema wrote.

Following her death, police recovered a voice note in which Reema could be heard accusing her husband and mother-in-law of driving her to suicide. Reema had been living in her parental home after separating from her husband. She married Kamal Raj in March 2015.

According to her father, Kunnappada Mohanan, Reema had previously filed a complaint with the Kannappuram police, accusing her husband and mother-in-law of domestic harassment. He added that she took the extreme step after Kamal Raj allegedly threatened to take the custody of the couple's only son on July 20.
