Kochi: Amid incessant rains, an old building of the Government KUMP School in Eroor collapsed on Sunday night. A major tragedy was averted as the building crumbled while the school was closed for classes.

Local residents alleged that the authorities failed to act despite repeated warnings about the deteriorating infrastructure. According to them, the collapsed structure, which remained shut, was the school’s old kitchen.

A resident told Manorama News that around 200 children study at the school. It is also alleged that exposed iron rods from the building pose an ongoing threat to students.

Just a week ago, a building at Karthikappally UP School in Alappuzha also collapsed, triggering protests. The school headmistress stated that the old building was not in use and that she had prohibited students from going near it. According to reports, the roof collapsed due to heavy rain and strong winds that battered the area. The General Education Department had sought a report from the district collector over the incident.
