Cherupuzha: In a freak accident, 11 persons were injured when a bus lost control on a slippery road covered with moss and plunged sideways into an adjacent canal, which was almost 10 feet deep. The incident took place at Muthuvam in Kannur district on Monday morning.
Two of the injured, Devasia Veliyath (60) and Jessy Devasia (55), were admitted to MIMS Hospital in Kannur. Five others, Jose Vettikkappally, Thomas Thottathil (50), his wife Soly Thottathil (38), Jose Kayyalaparambil (68) and Allen Cyril (7) of Kuzhikalayil, who is a student at Prapoyil Higher Secondary School, Cherupuzha are undergoing treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur.
The remaining four injured persons were shifted to a hospital at Cherupuzha. They are, Milan Cyril (5) of Kuzhikalayil, who also studies at Prapoyil school, Sheeba Biju (48) of Kallipuzha, bus driver Akhil Thomas (28) and conductor Thekkanatt Sooraj (34).
Officials of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), who inspected the spot, said that the accident was caused by moss on the road. The private bus, which was heading to Payyanur from Muthuvam, was descending the slope on the road at Muthuvam when it slipped towards the side, crashed into a protective wall of a culvert and fell into a nearby canal.
Meanwhile, residents of the area alleged that, along with the moss, the unscientific construction of the road had led to the mishap. They pointed out that the protective wall, which collapsed when the bus hit it lacked even a single rod of steel.
The bus was not crowded when the accident took place. Local people led the rescue efforts and a team of police officers led by Cherupuzha inspector M P Vineesh Kumar also reached the scene.
