The action comes after an incident in which TP case convicts, Kodi Suni, Muhammad Shafi, and Shinoj, allegedly consumed alcohol at a hotel in the presence of police personnel. In connection with the incident, three police officers attached to the district police headquarters were suspended on Thursday.
The episode took place on June 17, when the accused were being escorted from Kannur Central Jail to the Thalassery court. The group had stopped for lunch at a hotel near the court. At the hotel, friends of the convicts joined them and consumed alcohol in full view of the police escort.
Following public outrage, an inquiry was launched. The investigation confirmed serious lapses on the part of the police. As the drinking incident had not surfaced earlier, Kodi Suni was granted a 15-day emergency parole on July 21. He was returned to Kannur Central Jail on Thursday night.
As per parole conditions, Suni was required to report regularly at the Meenangadi police station. However, the Special Branch reported that he failed to comply, travelled across multiple districts, and even attempted to cross state borders — all in violation of his parole terms.
