Piravom: Piravom town in Ernakulam district is experiencing severe traffic congestion after the traffic reforms and one-way rules introduced four months ago proved ineffective. As a result, long traffic blocks are now regularly reported at all major junctions in the town, including the bus stand area and Post Office Junction.

Adding to the chaos, the signboards installed to alert motorists about the new traffic arrangements have disappeared. This has led to vehicles from other areas entering one-way roads from the wrong side, creating further traffic snarls.

In recent days, goods vehicles have been seen parked even in front of the bus stand exit for unloading, blocking buses from leaving the stand. This forces local residents to intervene and remove the goods vehicles from the spot.

The municipality’s traffic reforms committee holds meetings whenever complaints are raised about traffic congestion and unauthorised parking. However, despite taking various decisions at such meetings, none are effectively implemented.

It has also been pointed out that the committee has failed to address key issues contributing to the congestion, such as the unloading of goods by business establishments during peak hours, unauthorised parking by private vehicles, and the encroachment of footpaths.

Another major concern for residents is the absence of a police aid post in the bus stand. Although an aid post previously functioned inside the stand, it is currently unmanned, giving antisocial elements a free hand to engage in unlawful activities. Locals allege that drug dealers and miscreants who harass students and other passengers have made the premises their haunt.

Students from educational institutions in several nearby panchayats who arrive at the bus stand daily to travel to their destinations are at particular risk. Residents have demanded that authorities ensure the presence of a police control room vehicle at the bus stand premises, at least during peak hours.
