Pandalam: To add sweetness to Onam delicacies, the production of Pandalam jaggery has begun at the Kadakkad Sugarcane Seed Production Centre under the Department of Agriculture. Sales are scheduled to start on August 26.

The jaggery will be sold exclusively through the farm’s counter. The Pathiyan variety is priced at ₹140 per kilogram, while the Chukkunda variety will be available at ₹160 per kilogram.

According to Agriculture Officer Sandeep P. Kumar, sales are expected to reach at least 8 tonnes this season. Packing has already started with the help of a filling machine. The jaggery is made from sugarcane cultivated over 15 acres under the seed production centre. Known for its purity and absence of adulterants, Pandalam jaggery enjoys strong market demand.

Last year, the unit produced only 2.5 tonnes for the season, while demand far exceeded supply. To bridge this gap, production has been increased this year. Skilled labourers from Tamil Nadu have been brought in on a contract basis for the manufacturing process.
