Ettumanoor: The Victory Library at Vettimukal, which had remained closed for three decades due to neglect, is finally set to reopen, thanks to the efforts of a local collective. The restored library will resume operations in all its former glory this Independence Day.

One of the earliest libraries in the state, the Victory Library at Vettimukal has a history spanning more than five decades. Once a thriving hub for readers, the library operated in a well-equipped two-storey building and boasted an extensive collection of novels and publications. In its prime, it attracted a steady stream of visitors, particularly during morning and evening hours. However, from the 1990s onwards, visitor numbers began to decline.

As footfall dwindled, the library was gradually abandoned. With no one to maintain it, the building fell into disrepair, overgrown with shrubs, while its book collection suffered severe termite damage. Although demands to revive the library were raised several times, no concrete action followed.

Last year, when the building was on the verge of complete ruin due to age and neglect, a group of people with a fondness for the library’s legacy and reading culture came together to form a collective. Determined to breathe new life into the institution, they mobilised support, collected contributions from like-minded individuals, and restored the building.

The revived library now houses books donated by the public and various voluntary organisations. It has been equipped with facilities such as an office, a reading room, and a dedicated book collection area.

The revamped Victory Library will be inaugurated at 10 am on August 15 by municipal chairperson Lovely George, with library president Cyril G Narikkuzhy presiding. The event will feature various programmes in connection with Independence Day celebrations.
