Nilambur: The Kerala government on Saturday handed over ₹5 lakh as financial assistance to the family of Ananthu (15), who was electrocuted on June 7 near Vazhikadavu while on his way to a stream for fishing. Nilambur MLA Aryadan Shoukath handed over the aid to Ananthu's parents - Suresh and Shobha - in the presence of village and panchayat officials.

The tragedy happened when the boy, a class 10 student, came into contact with an illegal electric fence installed by a private landowner to deter wild boars. Ananthu, along with three friends, had gone fishing when three of them touched the live wire. The fourth boy ran to alert residents, who rushed to the spot, disconnected the power, and shifted the injured to the hospital. However, Ananthu was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities.

The incident sparked tension in the area, coming just days before the Nilambur assembly bypoll. Political parties traded accusations and staged protests, adding to the unrest.
