Vechoochira: Vechoochira panchayat has achieved the distinction of being the first local body in Pathanamthitta district to start a drive to vaccinate street dogs. The initiative was launched after rabies was confirmed in strays at Vechoochira and Kunnath. Five people had also received dog bites at Vechoochira.

The street dogs were captured by a team led by trained dog-catcher Libin, who belongs to Kundara in Kollam district, using a special type of net. Subsequently, the vaccine was administered under the supervision of Dr Anand, the veterinary doctor at Vechoochira animal hospital, by livestock inspectors Subhash, Rahul, Anu, Anuja Kumar and Jasmi.

The drive started at 6.30 am and lasted till 5.30 pm. As the number of street dogs is low in the Vechoochira panchayat, only 52 animals could be vaccinated. The team searched all public places, including schools, markets, bus stands, private auditoriums and places of worship, to trace the dogs.

Panchayat president E V Varkey and standing committee chairperson T K James said that the drive is being carried out with the own funds of the local body. “The vaccination for pet dogs will continue till August 20. A total of 120 pet dogs have received the shots so far,” they added.
