Irinjalakuda: An elephant turned violent during the feeding ritual at Koodalmanikyam Temple on Sunday morning, locking tusks with another elephant. However, no major injuries were reported as mahouts removed the jumbo's parts.
The incident took place while the elephants were being taken back after the feeding ceremony. The elephant, Kolakkadan Kutti Shankaran, suddenly turned violent and locked his tusks with Ambadi Mahadevan.
In the ensuing chaos, Kutti Shankaran’s mahout, Shiju, fell off its back and sustained minor injuries. A few people in the crowd, who ran for cover in panic, were also hurt.
Mahouts quickly moved the other elephants away from the scene. The commotion caused panic among devotees and onlookers, resulting in damage to nearby temporary shops. Mahouts then brought Kutti Shankaran under control.
Ambadi Mahadevan suffered a minor injury below his left tusk. Social forestry officials were present at the spot.
Following the incident, Chalakudy Social Forestry Officer Soumya CS announced a 15-day departmental ban on Kutti Shankaran. The ban will remain until a detailed inquiry and medical evaluation are completed.
