Pulpally: The lone elephant calf that strayed into Government LP School in Wayanad was spotted wandering in Kadagadda, Karnataka, on the other side of the Kabani River on Tuesday morning. The calf, which is just three months old, entered the Chekady school premises by Monday noon.

Forest officials then captured the calf in a net and released it in the Vettathoor forest area, where a herd of three elephants was grazing. The calf, which had joined the herd, was, however, later spotted wandering alone in a populated area in Kadagadda.

Local residents found the calf on the border of the Dibikuppa forest, which forms part of Nagarhole National Park. Forest officials who arrived from Dibikuppa tied a rope around the calf’s neck to gently guide it to a safe spot.

Meanwhile, forest officials and the public are puzzled as to how such a tiny elephant managed to cross the Kabani River, which has extremely strong currents. It is assumed that the calf must have jumped into the water when the elephant herd in Vettathoor forest swam across the river.

The calf was first sighted on Monday morning at Velukolli. By noon, it had strayed into the school through a gap in the broken boundary wall. To the surprise of both teachers and children, the calf remained calm, running around the school veranda and grazing on plants.
