Kannur: A 40-year-old man set a woman ablaze at her residence in Uruvachal, Kuttiyattoor, on Wednesday. Praveena (39), wife of Ajeesh, sustained severe burns in the attack. Jijesh, a native of Kuttav, reportedly poured fuel on the woman and set her on fire. He also sustained burns during the murder attempt. Both are currently undergoing treatment at Pariyaram Government Medical College Hospital. It is learnt that Praveena is in critical condition.

A police officer at the Mayyil police station told Onmanorama that the motive behind Jijesh’s attack has not yet been confirmed. The officer added that there is no information regarding the relationship between the accused and the victim.
According to reports, Jijesh reached Praveena’s house around 2 pm and asked for water. Later, while Praveena was busy with household works in the backyard of the house, he attacked her. Neighbours, who rushed to the house after hearing her cries for help, took both to the hospital.
As per the police FIR, the attack took place at Praveena’s rented house in Uruvachal. Her husband is working abroad, and the couple has a daughter.
It is learnt that Praveena and the accused were acquainted, as both hail from Kuttav.
