Malappuram: The construction of ‘She stay’, a hostel to provide accommodation for women at low tariffs in Malappuram town, has entered the final stage, and the facility will be inaugurated by the last week of September.
The women’s hostel, located at Nechikkutty in Kavungal, is being constructed by the Malappuram municipality with its own funds and an allotment from the Pradhan Mantri Yojana Karyakram programme of the Central government. The total expenses for the hostel come to around ₹2.50 crore.
The work on the hostel is being completed after a long wait of five years. Even though the foundation stone was laid on July 16, 2020, the construction began only on October 16, 2021. At that time, it was announced that the building would be ready by September 2022. However, discrepancies in the DPR (detailed project report) led to alterations in the estimate and plan, causing a delay in obtaining the mandatory sanctions.
The upcoming women’s hostel will have advanced facilities offering a comfortable stay for government employees, students, candidates arriving in Malappuam to take various competitive exams, women visiting the town for other purposes and those travelling alone. There would be space to accommodate around 100 people at a time in the three-storey building, having AC rooms, suit rooms, dormitory, kitchen, health club, recreation centre, visual media centre and guest room.
While the She Stay project has been included in the Central government’s NULM (National Urban Livelihoods Mission), a park is also coming up near the campus with a ₹75 lakh allocation under the Centre’s Amrut programme.
The progress of the work was evaluated recently by an official team led by Municipal chairperson Mujeeb Kadery. The team included standing committee chairpersons Mariyumma Shareef Konothody and C P Ayishabi, ward members Nanath Sameera Mustafa, Raseena Safeer Uluvan and Kadeeja Musaliyarakath and representative of the builder Bapu.
