Wayanad: A 25-year-old man from Nadavayal, Wayanad, has tested positive for amoebic meningoencephalitis, taking the total number of cases in Kerala to eight, doctors at the Kozhikode Medical College and Hospital said.

So far, three cases each have been reported from Malappuram and Kozhikode, and two from Wayanad. A native of Sulthan Bathery was confirmed with the infection on Saturday, according to the Wayanad District Medical Officer (DMO).

One patient, Anaya of Korangad, Thamarassery, died of the disease recently. Her two brothers are under treatment. A one-year-old child from Omassery is on a ventilator after her condition worsened.

In Wayanad, an emergency meeting chaired by the District Collector was held on Sunday to coordinate preventive measures. DMO Dr T Mohandas issued a public alert, urging people to seek immediate medical attention if they develop fever, vomiting or headache.

Health officials said the infection, though not spread from person to person, is often fatal. It is caused by a virus that spreads through contaminated water, especially from ponds and tanks.
