Malappuram: The body of a young woman who jumped into the river from the Kootilangadi Bridge on Friday night was recovered on Saturday. The deceased is Devananda, daughter of Madhu, a native of Munduparamba.
She had already been reported missing at the Malappuram police station prior to the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 8.30 pm on Friday. A couple on a motorbike saw her sitting on the bridge parapet and tried to speak to her, but she leapt into the water before they could intervene.
Emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Force, trauma care teams, police, volunteers and residents, launched an extensive search operation. Her body was later found near the pump house beneath the Paruvamanna suspension bridge.
Police said Devananda, originally from Olickara in Tirurangadi, had been living in a rented space in Malappuram.
