Kochi: The Ernakulam Rural police have launched an internal inquiry after a leaked audio clip, purportedly featuring a frustrated policeman’s viral phone call to the district police chief’s office, triggered a row. The clip, which surfaced on Monday, has sent ripples through the force, revealing a curse word during a heated exchange between two policemen over a safety request raised by the caller.
The audio captures the voice of a man, who identified himself as a traffic duty policeman in Perumbavoor, contacting the police superintendent’s office in Aluva. In the call, he urgently requested a reflective jacket to wear during duty hours, citing the absence of proper safety gear after 6 pm, particularly amid the recent surge in traffic. He explained that he had initially approached the traffic police station for the jacket but was redirected to the SP’s office instead.
As the official on the other end attempted to respond, the caller cut in. At that moment, a curse word was audibly heard in the background. The caller immediately grew agitated and demanded to know what kind of language was being used within the police office. The audio of this exchange was later circulated widely on social media, prompting the Ernakulam Rural police to initiate an internal probe.
However, a senior officer from the Rural police dismissed the clip as misleading. According to him, the audio had been edited, and the curse word was an incidental remark from a separate conversation inside the office that was inadvertently picked up by the phone. He added that the policeman’s safety concerns had since been addressed, with necessary action already taken. The officer further clarified that the two matters—the phone call and the overheard curse word—were being treated as unrelated incidents.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that investigators are also looking into how the audio clip was leaked into the public domain.
