Nedumkandam: An Idukki couple chose to fund the construction of a house for an underprivileged family with the money they had saved for their daughter’s wedding.
Ashokan of Vypel Veettil and his wife Biji from Nedumkandam set an example by conducting a simple wedding and using the savings to build a home for a family in need. The couple entrusted ₹5 lakh to the SNDP branch 1942 at Nedumkandam, which utilised the funds to construct a home for a woman and her three daughters.
Other members of the branch also contributed smaller amounts and offered voluntary labour, enabling the house to be completed in just 61 days. As a result, the housewarming ceremony for the family was held on the same day as the wedding of Amritha and Anandu, a native of Kunjithanni.
SNDP Shakha administrative council members Saji Chalil and A V Manikuttan said three more families have already approached them with similar offers. The next house under this initiative is planned to be constructed in Nedumkandam Minor City.
During the housewarming ceremony held on Sunday, members of the SNDP Shakha administrative council, zonal office-bearers, the chairman of the Kudumbayogam (family unit), and convenors took part. Union president Saji Parambath lit the Bhadradeepam (traditional lamp) and officially handed the house over to the family.
