Hydroelectric project damage near Chenkulam is causing concern as tunnel construction leads to house damage.
Adimali: The houses in Chenkulam near here are found to be damaged due to rock blasting in connection with the tunnel construction of the Upper Chenkulam Hydroelectric Project.
Cracks have appeared on the walls of the houses belonging to Shivaprasad from Muthuvankudi Koodaram and Savithri from Thekkumthadathil. When rocks are blasted, explosions occur with strong tremors. Complaints have been raised about the damage occurring to houses with relevant authorities.
To find a solution, a study team from CSIR-CIMFR, operating under the Central Government, arrived at the site, conducted an inspection, and started trial blasting, but the problem has not been resolved. Following this, local residents have obstructed the construction work. In this situation, a demand has been raised for the use of modern technology for tunnel construction.
The Upper Chenkulam Hydroelectric Project is being implemented by utilizing the excess water reaching the Chenkulam dam upon the completion of construction activities for the Pallivasal Extension and the ongoing Chenkulam Augmentation projects.
The proposed hydroelectric power station is being established on the banks of the Muthirappuzha River, near the Chenkulam Hydroelectric Power Station in Vellathooval. Even when rock blasting began as part of the tunnel construction in the areas of Surge Hill and the pipeline, houses had already sustained damage.
