Mass cleaning programme to clear waste from Vembanad Lake launched

Kumarakom: An ambitious programme to clean the Vembanad Lake with people’s participation has been launched in the Naalupank backwater area near Kumarakom in Kottayam. The initiative aims to form a collective of thousands of people who care for the Vembanad Lake to carry out the cleaning.
The State Wetland Authority, Bhoomimitra Sena – an organisation working to protect the Vembanad Lake – Kumarakom Nature Club, Sri Kumaramangalam Higher Secondary School, Alappuzha SD College, and Kumarakom panchayat are partners in the programme.

Plastic and non-plastic waste collected from the lake by volunteers of Bhoomimitra Sena was handed over to the Haritha Karma Sena by Kumarakom grama panchayat president Dhanya Sabu. Former panchayat president A P Salimon, ward member P K Sethu, secretary T U Surendran, Nature Club vice-president P S Raghu, Bhoomimitra Sena school coordinator P A Abhilash, and K K Sunil Kumar also spoke at the function.
The cleaning was led by Nature Club advisory committee member C P Jayan, joint secretary C J Lyju, Sumam Joseph Visakhamthara, K K Sunil Kumar, V T Radhakrishnan, and members of the Haritha Karma Sena.
