Kottayam: The International Day of Sign Languages was celebrated in Kottayam on Tuesday. On the occasion, District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena inaugurated a training programme on sign language for government officials organised by Kerala Deaf Consortium and released a handbook on sign language. Social justice officer Biju Ben presided over the function.

During the class, a question was raised on how to address the District Collector in sign language, to which the reply was to display the English alphabets D and C. The programme offered an insight for people who can speak into the mode of communication used by those living in a world of silence.

Other crucial signs taught during the class included curling the moustache to indicate ‘father’ and touching the area on the nose which is pierced to wear a ring to refer to ‘mother’. Reshma R Nath, the sign language translator who conducted the class, also informed the participants that love is indicated by holding both hands tightly over the chest. In total, 54 signs were introduced to the government officials during the programme, including those welcoming and greeting colleagues, family, the Internet, money, price, water and the word ‘please’.

Kerala Deaf Consortium coordinator K C Isaac, Elias Mathew, P J Robin, Sijo T James, Mini Issac and Jojo K Antony spoke at the event.
