Thrissur: An outbreak of African swine fever has been reported in Mulankunnathukavu panchayat of central Kerala, authorities confirmed on Friday. The disease was detected in pigs from the sixth ward following tests conducted at a government laboratory in Bhopal.

A rapid response unit has been pressed into service to curb the spread, officials said. According to an official release, the Animal Husbandry Department has launched containment measures under its leadership. The affected farm has been placed under a one-kilometre infected zone, while a 10-kilometre surrounding area has been marked as a surveillance belt.

District Collector Arjun Pandyan has prohibited the transport and sale of pork from the notified areas and directed pork-selling outlets to shut down temporarily. These steps are in line with the Centre’s action plan for tackling the disease.
