Kuthuparamba: Kuthuparamba Municipality has won the Golden Award for Best Waste Management Activities, instituted by the State Pollution Control Board. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the award at a function held in Angamaly today.
The municipality secured the award through a series of effective waste management initiatives. In March 2025, Kuthuparamba was officially declared garbage-free. All commercial and non-commercial establishments in the town , including government and private offices, banks, schools and anganwadis oo have achieved a garbage-free status. In addition, the townships of Kuthuparamba, Pookodu and Thokkilangadi have also been declared completely waste-free.
Inorganic waste from households and businesses is collected by Haritha Karma Sena volunteers and segregated at the collection centre in Palapparambu before being sent for treatment. For organic waste, a windrow composting unit is operating at Palapparambu, alongside Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Refuse Recovery Facility (RRF) and Mechanical Composting Facility (MCF) units.
An additional windrow composting unit is slated to open in Palapparambu within a month. The municipality is now advancing an action plan for a complete organic waste treatment system, establishing itself as a model for waste management across the state.
