Kalpetta: Forest department personnel on Monday arrested four persons for hunting sambar deer in the Moodakkolli forest zone under Irulam station limits of the Chethalath Range in South Wayanad.

The arrested were identified as Anil Mavath (48), Romon Pazhamballil (43), Varghese alias Joy of Ellil House (62), and Vishnu Dinesh of Kalloiyattukunnel (28). Officials also seized a country-made rifle, a car used by the gang, and the carcass of the deer.

This is the second such gang caught with deer carcasses and country-made guns in the last two months.

The operation was led by Chethalath Range Officer M K Rajeev Kumar, with Deputy Range Officer Abdul Gafoor K P and section officers P V Sunderesan and M S Suresh. South Wayanad Divisional Forest Officer Ajit K Raman said the department would intensify night patrolling in the region and deploy a special team for surveillance.
