A plantation worker was killed after a wild elephant attacked an autorickshaw near Pandallur on Tuesday night. His wife and the autorickshaw driver narrowly escaped.
The deceased Rajesh (48) was returning from the market with his wife, Ganga, when the wild tusker attacked them. Rajesh died on the spot. The autorickshaw was completely damaged in the accident.
Local residents blocked the road, refusing to let Rajesh’s body be taken, and demanded the immediate capture of the elephant. After more than two hours of talks with officials, including DSP V Vasanthkumar, Tahsildar Sirajunnisa, and Forest Range Officer Ravi, the authorities were allowed to take the body for post-mortem around 11.30 pm, following a promise to capture the tusker.
On Wednesday morning, hundreds of residents again blocked the road with demands including a government job for Rajesh’s wife, clearing roadside bushes, additional forest guards, and safe bus services after dark. Discussions with Gudalur MLA Pon Jayaseelan, Revenue Divisional Officer Gunasekaran, and former MLA R Dravidamani ended the blockade by 1 pm.
