Kannur: A man died after being hit by a train while allegedly attempting to flee after robbing an elderly man in New Mahe. The accused was accompanied by a friend named Basheer, who is currently in police custody.

The incident occurred around 6 pm on Saturday when 60-year-old A K Musthafa of Peringadi was walking along the railway track near New Mahe. Under the New Mahe railway overbridge, two youths attacked him, snatched his mobile phone, ₹1,500 and hit him with a stone before fleeing. Passersby heard Musthafa’s cries, rushed to his aid, and began chasing the suspects.

About half an hour later, a body was recovered from the railway track near Mammimukku. By night, local residents caught Basheer and handed him over to the police. During questioning, Basheer admitted that the person found dead on the railway track was his accomplice. "We also suspect the deceased may have been inebriated. Further investigation is underway,” a police officer said.
