Thiruvananthapuram: The Vanchiyoor police on Sunday arrested Vinayanand (60), a native of Vanchiyoor, in connection with the attack on his son Hridhik (28) over a demand for a luxury vehicle. The accused, who had been on the run, surrendered before the police.
The incident took place around 12.30 pm on Thursday at their residence in Thoppil Lane. According to the FIR, a tussle broke out between the duo after Hridhik allegedly asked his father, who owns a cafe in he city, for ₹50 lakh to buy a motorcycle and a car. The accused then hit Hridhik with a metal rod, leaving him with severe injuries. Hridhik is currently under treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
“The son, who was reportedly obsessed with bikes, used to constantly demand money to buy new ones. Although there were no prior police complaints, neighbours said they often heard arguments from the house at night. He was also undergoing treatment for mental health issues,” a police officer from Vanchiyoor station said. Hridhik, who is pursuing an online MBA course and lives with his parents, was reportedly gifted a bike worth ₹12 lakh in June.
“We are all shocked. His mother told me she wasn’t at home during the incident as she was away taking care of her mother, a cancer patient. Only Hridhik and his father know exactly what happened,” said Ahish, a close friend of Hridhik for six years. “It is true that he liked bikes, but not obsessively. He also never mentioned any plan to buy another bike. Media reports say he demanded a car, but he doesn't even have a car driving license. Why would he want one when he can’t drive?” he added.
Vinayanand has been booked under sections 318(1) (cheating), 318(2), and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
