Idukki: Flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant rain have caused widespread havoc across Idukki, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert in the district on Sunday. In view of the severe weather, the district administration has imposed restrictions on tourism activities.

All adventurous activities, including kayaking, boating, and jeep trekking, are currently banned.

As the Periyar River continues to overflow, seven houses were flooded in Chandravanam and Vikas Nagar areas of Vandiperiyar. Revenue officials visited the affected sites and began relocating residents to safer locations. Authorities have warned that more houses may be affected as water is being released from the Mullaperiyar dam.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has alerted people residing on the banks of the Periyar river in the district to exercise extreme caution.

Mudslides, landslides, and flash floods have been reported across the district since Friday night. On Saturday night, a person was killed after his two-wheeler lost control and rammed into a mud pile at Vellaramkunnu on the Kumili-Aanavilasam road.

Heavy rainfall on Friday night also triggered flooding in Kumily, Nedumkanadam, and Kattappana, where water entered several houses and residents were evacuated overnight. Around 45 families were shifted to safe locations on Saturday.

Television visuals showed a parked van being washed away in Nedumkanadam as water levels rose in the Kootar River.
