Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Human Rights Commission has directed authorities to ensure that milk and eggs are distributed regularly and in the prescribed quantities at Anganwadis under the Poshaka Balyam scheme.

Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas instructed the Director of Women and Child Development to strictly enforce the existing guidelines after receiving complaints that milk and eggs were not being provided in adequate quantities at Anganwadis under Urban 3 in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to the investigation report submitted by the Director, the scheme, which provides eggs twice a week and milk twice a week, was launched in 2022–23. A circular issued on May 20, 2022, mandates that each child should receive 125 ml of milk. However, the report found that this rule was not followed properly in some centres, with only 500 ml of milk given even when more than four children were present.

The Director has since instructed all Anganwadis to comply strictly with the circular. The Commission’s action follows complaints filed by Anganwadi workers and helpers in Thiruvananthapuram Urban.
