Kochi: Health officials have confirmed a new case of cholera in Ernakulam. The latest case was detected in a migrant worker residing in Kakkanad.

According to Ernakulam District Medical Officer (DMO), Vidya KR, the infection was confirmed on October 25. The patient, who had recently arrived from another state, developed symptoms shortly after reaching Kochi and was admitted to the Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital, where laboratory tests confirmed cholera.

“The patient is out of danger. It is understood that he doesn't have so many direct contacts after getting infected. But those who had close contact with him have been tested and placed under observation,” said the DMO.

Cholera was reported again at a time when Kerala is grappling with the spread of amoebic meningoencephalitis. It raises further concerns about water-borne diseases in the state.
