The Indian Coast Guard evacuated a Ukrainian crew member from a Malta-flagged oil tanker following a medical emergency off the coast of Kochi on Sunday.

The man, identified as Milishchuk Roman (58) was suffering from acute periumbilical pain while the vessel, MT Minerva Vera, was en route to Fujairah in UAE. The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) in Kochi received a distress call around 1.42 am.

Upon receiving the alert, MRSC swiftly coordinated the evacuation. A medical assistant from an ICG ship assessed the patient’s condition, administered first aid and necessary injections before evacuation.

He was then transferred using Tug Ocean Elite, operated by the Cochin Port Trust, with the Coast Guard medical assistant onboard. The tug reached Kochi Port at 1.10 pm, where the patient was shifted to Lourdes Hospital for further treatment.
