LSG polls: KS Sabarinadhan Cong Mayor candidate in TVM Corp, names announced in 48 wards

Thiruvananthapuram: Former MLA K S Sabarinadhan will lead the Congress campaign in the upcoming local body elections in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, party leader K Muraleedharan announced on Sunday. The initial list of Congress candidates released by Muraleedharan includes 48 names, including Sabarinadhan.

The list includes youth representatives, senior leaders, sitting and former councillors. Currently, the Congress-led UDF ranks third in the LDF-ruled Corporation, trailing behind the BJP, which serves as the main opposition.

Sabarinadhan, who represented the Aruvikkara constituency in the Kerala Assembly from 2015 to 2021, will contest from the Kowdiar ward. Though a resident of the neighbouring Sasthamangalam ward, he was fielded from Kowdiar as his home ward is reserved for women this time.

Senior leader Johnson Joseph, who has over three decades of experience in local body politics, will contest from Ulloor. Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee (DCC) president Subash will be the candidate from Kinavoor, while former councillor and parliamentary party leader (2015–2020) Anil Kumar D will contest again from Pettah, which he had represented in the 2015–2020 council.

Among other notable candidates, Youth Congress state secretary Neethu Raghuvaran will contest from Pangappara, and former councillor Anitha will be fielded from Kudappanakunnu, a women’s reservation ward. KSU district president and law student Vaishna Suresh will contest from Muttada, while 2015 council member Thresiamma Thomas will be the candidate from Nalanchira. Youth Congress state general secretary Neethu will contest from Vazhuthakkad. Sitting member Mary Pushpam and DCC general secretary M S Anil Kumar are also included in the first list.

In the 101-ward Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the LDF currently holds 51 seats, the BJP 34, and the UDF 10, of which eight were won by the Congress in the 2020 polls. 

Muraleedharan said the second list of candidates will be released within two days after concluding discussions with allies, the Muslim League and the RSP. The party will also launch an intensive nine-day campaign covering all 101 wards. Opposition Leader V D Satheesan will inaugurate the campaign at Thirumala on Monday.
