Thalassery: Amid much fanfare, Speaker A N Shamseer inaugurated the newly beautified M G Road. During the ceremony, he unveiled a plaque declaring the Baobab tree, which was planted by the British, as the heritage tree of Thalassery.

The stretch of road between the municipal office and the old bus stand junction, along with the adjoining footpath, has been renovated under he project. The municipality deepened the drains on either side of the stretch between the municipal office and the General Hospital and laid slabs at an investment of ₹1.75 crore.

In the second phase, the road was concreted using ₹2.50 crore allotted by the Ports Department. The municipality spent an additional ₹90 lakh on beautification, including pavement upgrades. Renovation of the bus shelter en route to Kannur has also begun.

Concrete pots have been placed along M G Road, adding a touch of greenery with flowering plants. The footpath has been tiled, and a granite bench now graces the pavement in front of BEMP School. Seating has been arranged beneath the shade of trees with decorative lights for illuminating the stretch. The walls of Government Brennan School and BEMP HSS have been transformed with an artwork, created in collaboration with the Vypari Vyavasayi Samithi.

Street vendors, previously located in front of BEMP School, have been relocated near the Jubilee Shopping Complex. Parking on the pavement remains prohibited.

Municipal Chairperson K M Jamunarani, Vice Chairperson M V Jayarajan, Sub Collector Karthik Panigrahi and Standing Committee Members Shabhana Shanavas and T K Sahira addressed the gathering.
