Kochi: A six-month-old baby girl was found dead with severe injuries on her neck at Karippala in Karukutty, near Angamaly, on Wednesday morning. The deceased is Delna Maria Sarah, daughter of Antony and Ruth.

Angamaly police have registered a case of unnatural death, and an investigation is underway. Though it is prima facie suspected to be a case of murder, the police said the exact cause of death can be confirmed only after a detailed probe.

According to Mary Antony, Karukutty panchayat ward member, the incident occurred around 9 am. “The baby was bathed and laid down near her grandmother Rosy, Ruth’s mother, in her bedroom. Ruth went to the kitchen for a few minutes, and when she returned, she found the baby unconscious and covered in blood. Hearing her cries, her husband and neighbours rushed to the spot and took the baby to a nearby hospital. However, doctors could not save her,” Mary Antony said.

She also said that Rosy, the baby’s grandmother, has reportedly been under treatment for certain mental health issues. “After the incident, she became uncontrollable and was shifted to a nearby hospital for care. What exactly happened inside the room remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing,” Mary said.

Ruth, the baby’s mother, was staying at her husband’s house in Chellanam, Kochi, but had returned to her parental home in Karukutty to help her ailing parents. After Delna’s birth, she had been waiting to complete the baby’s baptism before returning to Chellanam.

Mani, a neighbour who rushed the baby to the hospital, told the media that there were visible injury marks on the infant’s neck. “It is still not clear what caused the baby’s death. She was covered in blood when we took her to the hospital,” he said.

Angamaly Police confirmed that they are in the process of recording statements from the family members and neighbours. Police sources said that they are also verifying the circumstances that led to the death and what happened in the house that morning.
