Malappuram: African Swine Fever (ASF) has been confirmed in a wild boar found partially decomposed in the Marutha area under the Vazhikkadavu Forest Range near Nilambur. Following the confirmation, District Collector V R Vinod has declared a 10-kilometre radius around the site — covering the panchayats of Vazhikkadavu, Edakkara, Pothukallu, Chungathara, Karulai, and Muthedam — as a surveillance zone.

Officials confirmed that no pig farms are located within a one-kilometre radius of the affected area, and hence culling will not be required. However, strict restrictions have been imposed on the sale, transport, and distribution of pig meat and related products, and pig feed within and outside the notified zone.

Farmers across the district have been urged to remain alert and to immediately report any signs of illness in pigs to the nearest veterinary officer.

Authorities clarified that ASF affects only pigs and poses no threat to humans or other animals. As there is no available vaccine or treatment, the disease can result in large-scale pig fatalities. Preventive measures are being reinforced to contain any potential spread to other parts of the district.
