Mandiram: The Punalur - Muvattupuzha state highway has recently been renovated by spending lakhs of rupees. However, the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) and the contract company have not yet installed any street lights on the roadside, forcing travellers to drive in darkness in the stretch between Kuthungalpadi and Mandiram.

A new road was constructed by straightening the curves from Kuthungalpadi to Mandiram when the Konni – Placheri road was renovated. Although the new road stretches to more than a kilometre, street lamps are there, only on the old road. Electric posts are not installed here to connect electric lines for the street lamps.

Lamp posts aren’t erected in this stretch by the KSTP, unlike in other places. The area remains in darkness after sunset. Moreover, the road is mostly deserted at night. The headlamps of vehicles are the only source of light here.

Meanwhile, there are only five more days left for the annual Sabarimala season to begin. Hundreds of pilgrims who travel on foot to the holy shrine take this path. Lack of street lights on the road is likely to cause difficulties for the pilgrims at night.
