Thiruvananthapuram: Amid the police investigation into the death of BJP activist Anand K Thampi, who died by suicide allegedly after being denied a seat in the local body elections, a woman leader of the saffron party has attempted to kill herself. Salini, a Mahila Morcha leader, was found with a bleeding hand after she cut her wrist in the early hours of Sunday.

She was rushed to the district hospital in Nedumangad after her son found her injured. According to hospital sources, she is now out of danger.

It is learnt that she took the extreme step due to depression after the party denied her a seat in the local body polls.

Salini belongs to the Panaykottala ward in the Nedumangad municipality. She had been very active in her ward's election campaign.

“My candidacy was confirmed. But two or three RSS activists from the Karippoor branch of the Mahila Morcha raised false allegations against me and reported them to the party leadership. They defamed me in the ward. I decided to end my life because I was depressed by this false propaganda against me,” Salini told Manorama News.

She added that the RSS activists acted out of personal vengeance by pressuring the party leadership to deny her a seat.

“I found it very difficult to survive after facing such personal humiliation. I have filed a complaint with the party leadership,” she said.

"Ten years back, when I was preparing to contest the election from my ward, the same persons raised allegations. Then I had to contest the election from another ward," she said.

She said attempts to deny her a ticket were not from the BJP but from some people with vested interests. Even though she refused to name them, Salini said such fake accusations surface only during election time.

"They wanted another person as a candidate in the ward. Since the party is likely to deny a ticket to their candidate, they made fake allegations so that the party may reconsider the other person," she said.

However, the local BJP leadership claimed that Salini will be fielded in 16th  ward of Nedumangand municipality.
