Thiruvananthapuram: A 26-year-old woman died of amoebic meningoencephalitis at the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. The deceased, Vinaya, was a native of Anadu.
According to health officials, Vinaya had initially sought treatment at the Government District Hospital in Nedumangad for fever and related complications. She was later shifted to the Medical College Hospital after she suffered a seizure. Further clinical investigations revealed that she had contracted the infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba. She was under treatment at GMCH for the past 40 days.
Health officials have yet to confirm the source of the infection. Vinaya, a housewife, reportedly consumed water from the well in her house compound.
As per official records, Kerala reported 17 cases and seven deaths due to the disease in November alone. A total of 40 people have succumbed to the infection so far this year.
Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is conducting a field-level survey in Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts to identify the cause of the outbreak.
