Kumily: With the Sabarimala pilgrimage season in progress, Kumily police have intensified action against those stopping vehicles of Ayyappa devotees along the Kollam–Theni National Highway for commercial gain.

Police registered a case against the owner and an employee of Kerala Spices at Koluthupalam on Tuesday for obstructing traffic and coercing pilgrims into their shop.

Police launched the action after receiving multiple complaints that vehicles carrying devotees were being intercepted and passengers forced into roadside establishments. Staff members allegedly stepped onto the highway, blocked vehicles, including buses, and compelled travellers to enter their shops.

The practice caused severe traffic congestion as large vehicles were halted on the carriageway, creating safety risks for pedestrians. Videos circulating on social media showed shop workers blocking vehicles and forcing them to stop. Based on these visuals and subsequent inspections, police booked the shop owner and staff.
