Thiruvananthapuram: Public campaigning for the first phase of the Kerala local body elections will come to an end at 6 pm on Saturday, the State Election Commission said on Friday.
The ban on campaigning will apply in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts, where polling is scheduled to be held on December 9 as part of the two-phase election.
State Election Commissioner A Shajahan said political parties must ensure that last-minute events and rallies remain peaceful and do not trigger any law and order concerns. He also cautioned that valedictory programmes must not obstruct public movement.
District Collectors and Police officials have been instructed to strictly curb any provocative acts, disputes, unauthorised loudspeaker announcements and the growing tendency to play campaign songs at high volume during the final hours of canvassing.
The Commission reminded candidates and parties that they must adhere to the Model Code of Conduct as well as the Green Protocol during the conclusion of campaigning. As mandated under Section 126(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, public campaigning must cease 48 hours before voting. This rule applies to local body elections as well.
