Kalpakancherry: Expatriate siblings Subair and Moideenkutty, who flew down from abroad tto cast their votes in he local body polls, are now the ‘superstars’ of Kalpakancherry residents.
For, the candidate they voted for have won the election by two invaluable votes. UDF-backed independent candidate from ward 7 of the panchayat, Pichiyath Suharabi, is the one who secured victory by two votes.
Siblings Subair and Moideenkutty of Athirumada Chathanath House, both active workers of Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre, flew down from Sharjah at their own expense on December 6, by which time the election heat was already at its peak. Their goal was to reclaim the ward, which the LDF had won in the last election. They actively participated in the campaign with UDF workers and cast their votes. They were surprised when the verdict was announced as Suharabi won by just two votes.
The duo returned to Sharjah on December 15. Subair runs a cafeteria in Sharjah, while Moideenkutty works in the electricity department there. Flying down to homeland for just to cast their votes cost the brothers Rs.45,000. Over 400 expatriates from the panchayat came back to vote in the election this time.
