Perumbavoor: `Let it move on its own if needed' seems to be the logic behind the road tarring works along the stretch passing through the Elavumkudy polders in Koovappady panchayat.

Local residents are rather embarrassed to see that while the road received a fresh black topping, the authorities completed the work without relocating an electric pole that stands almost in the middle of the stretch.

The stretch, which cuts through the Elavumkudy polders, connects East Aimury with Korumbassery in Koovappady panchayat. Falling within wards 11 and 12, the road continues to have a power pole planted right at its centre, even after the tarring works were completed.

Residents warn that a major tragedy could be waiting to happen at this spot. Although the road has a total width of eight metres, tarring has been carried out on only three metres. Traffic along the stretch has increased significantly in recent times, as it serves as a shortcut from the Madras Junction in Koovappady to the Mudakkuzha panchayat via Korumbassery.

Two-wheeler riders complain that the electric pole is hard to spot at night, heightening the risk of accidents. Residents caution that unless the pole is relocated or a high mast light installed at the centre of the polders, the danger will persist.
