The Kerala government has sanctioned ₹30 lakh as financial assistance to the family of Ram Narayan Baghel, a native of Chhattisgarh who was lynched to death on suspicion of theft at Agali in Palakkad.
Baghel, a migrant worker, was brutally assaulted by a group of people at Alathur in Agali on December 17. He later died the same day while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The post-mortem report confirmed that the death was caused by injuries sustained in the assault.
According to the Revenue Department order, Baghel belonged to a Scheduled Tribe community and was living below the poverty line. He is survived by his wife, mother, and two minor children aged eight and six. The Palakkad District Collector had recommended that the family be granted the maximum possible financial assistance.
After examining the Collector’s report, the government decided to extend aid from the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. Of the total amount, ₹5 lakh each will be given to the victim’s mother and wife, while ₹10 lakh each will be allocated to the two children.
The amounts sanctioned in the names of the minor children will be placed in fixed deposits with a nationalised bank until they attain the age of 18. The interest accrued will be paid to their guardian, as per the order.
For disbursement, ₹30 lakh will be released to the Palakkad District Collector from the account maintained by the Finance Department’s Additional Chief Secretary, the custodian of the CMDRF. The Collector has been directed to distribute the amount and report compliance to the government within a week.
