Two staff members sustained burns after a gas leak triggered a blast at Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's Sayanam old-age home at Attukal on Friday. According to Fire and Rescue personnel, Maya (30) suspected a gas leak while changing a cylinder and attempted to close the valve with her hand.
When she let go, the accumulated gas ignited, resulting in an explosion that left her with 18 per cent burns below the hip. Rajeev (30), who was assisting her, sustained 10 per cent burns. The injured are admitted to PRS Hospital.

The old-age home houses 41 residents, all aged above 70. A Fire and Rescue team led by senior rescue officer Shaafi M, along with officials Raseef, Shameer, Sueesh and Suniha, and Fort Police Station Inspector Sibin Joseph, assisted residents in safely evacuating the elderly from the building.
