Thrissur: Viyyur police have registered a theft case after trees worth several lakh rupees were stolen from the Kerala Police Academy campus at Ramavarmapuram here. Thieves cut and removed two trees, each more than 30 years old, from within the academy premises. Preliminary information suggests that thieves smuggled out sandalwood. Police launched an investigation based on a complaint filed by the academy’s estate officer, Satheesh TU.
The academy is guarded round the clock by armed police personnel and has the constant presence of hundreds of officers and trainee cadets. After the state police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, the Ramavarmapuram academy is the largest police establishment in Kerala.
Police said the thieves entered the premises and removed only the valuable heartwood portions of the trees. Preliminary information suggests that sandalwood or agarwood has been smuggled out.
The incident came to light several days after the theft. The academy campus spans nearly 348 acres and has a high density of trees, including sandalwood, agar, teak and rosewood.
In response to the incident, the Administrative DySP issued a special circular directing intensified night patrolling and strict checks on outsiders entering and exiting the campus.
