Former Thrissur Mayor M K Varghese has expressed his intention to return to the Indian National Congress. Varghese said there is a strong possibility that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will come to power in the next five years.

Clarifying his political position, Varghese said he had never truly left the Congress, adding that he aligned with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) only because it was in power at the time.

“It is not that I am going to the Congress now; rather, the Congress has come to me,” he remarked. He also confirmed that he would campaign and seek votes for Rajan J Pallan.

Varghese served as the Mayor of Thrissur Corporation from 2020 to 2025. Following internal disputes within the Congress, he quit the party and contested the 2020 local body elections as an independent candidate. He won with the LDF's support and later became Mayor.

However, he did not actively support any party in the recent local body elections. Meanwhile, the Thrissur District Congress Committee (DCC) president said that no discussions have been held regarding Varghese’s re-entry into the party.
